This helped, along with the outlawing of drink-driving, to reduce\nthe number of fatalities on US roads, which had been increasing since the\n1920\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The import of vehicles after this law was passed was still a straightforward process, and it was often cheaper to buy a car overseas and import it, with a few simple modifications, than buy one from the manufacturers’ US operation. So, you could import a European or Japanese model of the same car and pay less than if you bought it from \u201cHonest Johns\u201d 2 blocks away from your house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This all changed\nin 1988, when US car dealers campaigned for tighter import regulations and the\nImported Vehicle Safety Compliance Act came into force. This meant that there was\na more rigorous system for inspecting and registering foreign-built vehicles,\nincluding establishing that any necessary modifications must be carried out by\ncertified Registered Importers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
