This ancient port city is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Algarve,  within walking distance of some excellent beaches.   The most splendid beach is Meia Praia to the east of town; the southern promontory features some sheltered cove beaches.  Praia de Dona Ana is beautiful and full of character, plenty to do for all ages, from beach activities to windsurfing.  If that sounds all to energetic just lie down and take in some of the best sun in the world.

Visitors to Lagos can also take time to discover some of the town's history, which
goes back to the Carthaginians several centuries BC. During the great Portuguese age of discovery under Henry the Navigator, the port became a caravel shipyard and was the jumping-off point for many a voyage to the East. Few historic buildings remain, apart from some ruins in the old section of town, because of the devastating earthquake of 1755. Much of the central town area today consists of a sprawling flea market.
Also to be seen is Customs House - within its arches Europe's first slave market
was conducted in 1441. There is also the beautiful church of Igreja de Santo Antonio, restored in 1715 and decorated with fantasy-inspired carvings. The municipal museum in the town houses an interesting and varied collection from Roman artefacts to deformed animal foetuses.

Near to Lagos is a small beach village of Burgau. Across the river from Lagos is Meia Praia, a very long sandy beach sheltered to the north by a gentle slope dotted with comfortable villas. To the west of Lagos the once upon a time fishing village of Praia da Luz is now devoted to the quieter side of the tourist trade and many residents from the colder northern climates. Near the coastal village of Salema there are some small Roman ruins proving the existence of its past life. Vila do Bispo to the west of Lagos is a very small administrative town for the Sagresarea that is the most south-west corner of Europe! The area is a must for every visitor to the Algarve as it presents a very impressive and dramatic sight of towering sheer cliffs being beaten by the weight of the vast Atlantic Ocean. It is from here that Prince Henry planned the several epic voyages of discovery that enlarged the known world of that time. Cape Santo Vicente is the name given to this promontory as it was here that the Saint supposedly landed and resided for a period. To the north of Lagos on the road to Lisbon is the small town of Aljezur with some fine nearby west coast beaches.
